How to Add Volume to Your Hair: Men’s Hair

March 25, 2016 By Andrew 7 Comments

Special thanks to edaros.com for helping us grow this post to 100k+ views

Today you are going to learn how to add incredible amounts of volume to your hair.

But wait there’s more!

I’ll ALSO teach you to style your hair and make sure it keeps the volume you added throughout the entire process.

The Lack of Knowledge

When you go out and search “how to style men’s hair” on Google you find results like this…

Add Volume Google Results

…not really what you are wanting to find when you  are looking for a tutorial on how to style your hair.

This is why I am here:

I have dug through all of the useless articles. I have spent hundreds of hours doing all of the intense learning. I have taught myself.

Now:

I want to bring my knowledge to you!

There is a severe lack of information when it comes to styling men’s hair, especially when it comes to having to add volume. All of the articles showing men are worthless for the guys trying to learn how to style their hair. Sure its nice to see the finished product, but its like having a process with 30+ steps and only showing the reader step 1. and step 30. It can definitely make you feel like this…

Steps to Add Volume

…which is not what we want.

How to Add Volume to Men’s Hair

Where do you start?

Get your hair damp.

This will always be the first step styling your hair.

First:

We need to add a pre-styler to our hair. This will give us the hold we need during blow-drying to achieve maximum volume.

Big Sexy Volumizing Gel Men's Hair Huge Add Volume
Start by taking about three pumps of Sexy Hair Big Sexy Blow Dry Volume Gel, or an alternative pre-styler(str8 by Rusk, Hanz de Fuko Spongewax), and applying it all over your hair starting from the roots being careful cover all of your hair equally.

I have a list of my recommended products and what they all do here.

Now:

You may be tempted to jump into drying, BUT we are about to expose our hair to direct heat so it is always smart to use a heat protector. They are extremely cheap and actually prevent damage in my experience.

Apply the spray very liberally. It usually takes about ten sprays to cover my entire head.

We have done all our prepping and can actually begin styling:

Begin by blow-drying your hair as shown below.

Scrunching and rubbing the hair in every direction in order to get it generally more dry. Focus on moving the hair around a lot and not holding the blow-dryer in one place.

There are two things we want to do after this

First:

Use a round brush to add more volume.

To do this we are going to grab a section of the hair, with the round brush, from the root and slowly pull straight up. At the same time we are using the blow-dryer to press against the hair.

(I use the highest heat and power setting on my blow-dryer during this for best results)

Here is a perfect example of what it should look like while you are doing this.

Repeat the motion about three time for each section of your hair. Always from the roots of your hair all the way to the tips. Slightly rotating the brush as you pull vertically.
This will create incredible volume! Continue sectioning off your hair strand by strand and using this technique across your hair.

Second:

Another technique I use for volume utilizes what most people think of when they talk about “hair brush”. I can almost guarantee you have a brush similar to this, so this technique might be more for you if you are not looking to buy another brush.

For this technique, again you will use the blow-dryer to follow the brush and press directly against the hair, while pulling it straight up.

The most important part here is to make sure the brush is rotated the opposite way once you have grabbed the hair. This along with the heat will give your hair a very bouncy and voluminous look.

Remember a brush is not the only way to add volume:

Your hands are incredibly powerful and useful when it comes to styling. One way I build volume is placing a few strands of my hair in between my index and middle finger, squeezing them together tightly,  and then pulling up from the root to the tip.

How to Add Product to Men’s Hair

Now:

Your hair is full of volume and probably looks out of control and a little like this.

From here we need to move into styling so we can achieve the perfect style that will last all day.

I have a few other tutorials on styling which can be found here and here if you are looking more styles and practice.

For the styling:

We will use Claymation by Hanz de Fuko (or Mister Pompadour Natural Beeswax Paste, which is available on Amazon Prime with free two day shipping.)

I have very long and thick hair so I need a product that is able to give me hold that lasts more than 30 minutes, otherwise I have hair falling in my face all day. Claymation does this perfectly and I love the look that it gives my hair.

You are going to want to start by first scooping a quarter size amount of Claymation from the jar and emulsifying it into your hands for about a minute.

From here you are going to want to spread it all around your hair. Starting from the back of your head, so you do not apply too much in the front and weigh down your hair.

To finish of the style, you are going to use your hands as a comb and push all of your hair into the direction you would like it to rest, for me that is to my right.

This tutorial was mainly focused on achieving the volume, but if you are stuck on styling be sure to check out my other posts on it. I will leave one more reference below which is a great video showing just the styling of an undercut similar to that of Mariano Di Vaio.

As always please share this post on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, or wherever else if you found it helpful and know others will as well. I genuinely hope it helped you with your style like first learning did for me. My hair changed my life and I hope you are able to achieve a similar experience now that you know how to add volume. If you have any questions please leave a comment and I will get to it as fast as possible and do not forget to subscribe below if you would like more content like this.

Do you perform the brushing procedure while hair is still damp?

Yes, that’s when it works best. Especially if your hair is naturally more curly!
